While Belize is often thought of as a scuba divers paradise, it is also home to many subtropical jungles and rainforests. But these forests are under severe pressure from agricultural expansion by local farm communities, and illegal harvesting of old growth mahogany and other hardwoods.

The Corozal Sustainable Futures Initiative (CSFI) has successfully managed the Shipstern Nature Reserve in Belize since 1989. In 2013 they were also asked to take over management of the Freshwater Creek and Honey Camp Forest Reserves - an area of almost 1 % of Belize. The three areas are part of biological corridor designed to protect Jaguars and many other endangered species, Central America is considered a "mega-biodiversity hot spot." with less than one half of one percent of the world's surface area, but almost 10 % of all known life forms.

Simple protection is not enough:Cooperation with local communities. economic opportunity, and productive and protective use is needed for the the preserves. CSFI seeks to create a model that conserves forests while also making them financially and ecologically sustainable, with a positive impact on the local residents.

Please help us support replanting in areas that have been cleared illegally. Or since verified carbon offsets from this project are not yet available, you can offset via our matching model: Your support will fund Plan Vivo offsets from another project area, and general funding for CSFI.
